Feds: Seattle police show 'pattern of excessive force'

Dear reader (there may be one), we've been watching this pattern for quite a while, haven't we?

Feds: Seattle police show 'pattern of excessive force'

Eleven months after pledging to “take a very deep dive” into allegations against the Seattle Police Department, U.S. Attorney Jenny Durkan has released a highly critical report of a Department of Justice investigation into police brutality in Seattle.

  • 1-in-5 violent encounters unconstitutional
  • investigation finds a pattern or practice of constitutional violations regarding the use of force that result from structural problems, as well as serious concerns about biased policing
  • The department’s supervisors and command staff don’t know what training their officers have received with regard to reporting violent incidents
  • Small group accounts for many violent interactions
  • Question of discrimination remains
The problems were years in the making, but how many years will it take to clean it all up?
