KENT, Wash. -- A Federal Way police officer shot a man in a parking lot outside a Kent shopping center.
The shooting happened around midnight Thursday at Pacific Highway South & South 260th Street.
Police said the incident started with a call from a woman in Federal Way who claimed that a man had violated a protection order she had against him.
The man left, but a short time later an officer said he spotted the suspect's white pickup in the shopping center parking lot.
The man was walking away from his truck, when police said the officer tried to get him to stop.
"The officer then saw what he was able to recognize as a handgun in the man's hand. The officer challenged him several times to drop the gun, at which point, the man then raised the gun toward the officer. The officer discharged his weapon several times striking the assailant in this case multiple times," said Kent police Lt. Pat Lowery.
The Kent Police Department is handling the investigation.
KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reporter Rick Price reported that the man who was shot was taken to Harborview Medical Center where he is in serious but stable condition.
The officer was not hurt.
All it takes is a call from a woman claiming a man violated a protection order (restraining order) to get the police riled up. The man could be no where near the woman when she makes the call, but usually no investigation is needed. (Interestingly, my stalker ex-husband used this tactic on me several time after I put a restraining order on him. His lawyer did the automatic mutual restraining order argument and I accepted. My ex then reported me several times while I was at work or in a different city!) Regardless, this man was found walking away from his truck before being shot several times in a Kent shopping center parking lot Thursday around midnight. Yes, you should always listen to police when they tell you to stop, especially in the Seattle Area. If you remember Kent Police also shot a domestic violence suspect in July.
